Why do fingerprint modules fail in cold weather?

In cold weather conditions, the recognition performance of fingerprint modules is often affected, resulting in recognition failure or slower recognition speed. Behind this phenomenon, there are multiple complex reasons hidden.
Firstly, cold weather causes the skin on the fingers to become dry. As the temperature decreases, the humidity in the air also decreases, which accelerates the evaporation of moisture on the surface of the finger skin, making it dry and rough. Dry skin not only makes it difficult to form clear fingerprint images, but also affects the sensor of the fingerprint scanner in capturing fingerprint information. Especially for capacitive fingerprint modules, their working principle relies on the tiny capacitance changes on the surface of the finger skin, and dry skin can significantly affect these capacitance changes, leading to recognition failure.
Secondly, cold weather can also affect the blood circulation of fingers. In order to maintain body temperature, the body's protective mechanism reduces blood circulation in the limbs to minimize heat loss. This change will cause a decrease in the temperature of the finger skin, slow down blood circulation, and thus affect the conductivity of the skin. Capacitive fingerprint scanners rely on changes in the conductivity of the skin surface to capture fingerprint information when recognizing fingerprints. Therefore, the decrease in conductivity will directly affect the recognition performance of fingerprint modules.
In addition, cold weather may also cause cracking or peeling of finger skin. Under the dual effects of dryness and cold, the skin of fingers is prone to cracking or peeling. These minor damages on the surface of the skin can interfere with the recognition process of the fingerprint scanner, making the fingerprint information blurry or difficult to recognize.
In summary, the negative impact of cold weather on the recognition performance of fingerprint modules is mainly due to dry finger skin, slow blood circulation, and skin cracking or peeling. These factors work together to make it more difficult to use fingerprint modules for identity verification in cold weather.
